A collection of subjects, styles and materials, the work of James has resisted strict categories. Through a painterly language and engagement with historical art, James’s has nonetheless firmly grounded itself in contemporaneity, navigating the spaces of ambiguity, of representation and abstraction. His canvases frequently depicting atmospheric landscape, evoking a simultaneously familiar and mysterious experience.
I just try to constitute the figure and then make it believable to myself and make it real, bring it to life. It's a kind of recuperation process.
