Tragicomica
Adelaide Cioni, Laura Grisi
Curated by Andrea Bellini, Francesco Stocchi
The Tragicomica exhibition brings together over three hundred works to explore the irony typical of Italian culture. This characteristic, which the philosopher Giorgio Agamben defined in 1996 as a strong "anti-tragic" propensity, represents a true national sensibility. Its deep roots trace back to Dante's Divine Comedy, a revolutionary work for its ability to tackle difficult subjects using language tied to everyday life and mixing "high" culture with popular culture.
The exhibition itinerary analyzes a period of over eighty years, from the end of the Second World War to the present day. The focus is on artists who have based their art and their worldview on the continuous contrast between comedy and tragedy.
This approach makes it possible to outline an unprecedented and multifaceted history of Italian art, which challenges and expands traditional canons. Furthermore, thanks to a rich program of events open to the public, the exhibition is not limited solely to the visual arts, but investigates these same themes in broader cultural fields, including cinema, theater, architecture, literature, and philosophy.
